| Training Description |
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides tools and strategies to increase client and therapist motivation, facilitate change in multiple intransigent, severe disorders, and manage crises and difficult problems that arise in session (e.g., dissociation, attacking the therapist, refusing to speak, etc.). Topics will include details and nuances of first sessions of individual psychotherapy in DBT(behavioral assessment, goal setting, getting a commitment), suicide risk assessment, using a hierarchy to target when multiple dysfunctional behaviors are present at one time, treating therapist burnout, completing accurate chain analysis, and making a determination about when to move clients into exposure treatment.
This training is geared towards individual psychotherapists who:
- Have some experience, a working knowledge, and/or prior training in DBT
- Want to hone their individual psychotherapy skills.
Note: There will not be an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

| Dialectical Behavior Therapy |
| Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABBP, at the University of Washington, is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is especially effective for those with chronic suicidal or other severe, dysfunctional behaviors. Research has shown DBT to be effective in reducing suicidal behavior, psychiatric hospitalization, dropout from treatment, substance abuse, anger and interpersonal difficulties. |

| Alec L. Miller, PsyD, is Co-Founder of Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants of Westchester, LLP, a private group practice based in White Plains, NY. He is also Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, Director of Clinical Services at PS 8 School-Based Mental Health Program, and Associate Director of the Psychology Internship Training Program at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.
Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 12 and 53), Past-President of Division 12's Section on Clinical Emergencies and Crises, 2007 APA Division 12 Program Chair, past Chair of the International Society for the Improvement and Training of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (ISITDBT), and recipient of the Service Award from ISITDBT. He is an invited member of the International Academy for Suicide Research, a consultant on the FDA’s Suicide Classification Project, and past Associate Editor of Cognitive and Behavioral Practice.
Dr. Miller received his BA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before earning his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University in Bronx, NY. He has become internationally known in the areas of adolescent depression and suicidology, non-suicidal self-injury, borderline personality disorder, and DBT. Since 1995, Dr. Miller has directed a clinical-research team adapting DBT for outpatient suicidal multi-problem adolescents, as well as contributing to the adaptation of DBT for other populations and settings. He has received federal, state, and private funding for his research. He has authored numerous articles, book chapters and two books, including one published by Guilford Press titled, Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents (2007) and another published by Hogrefe and Huber, titled, Childhood Maltreatment (2006). Upon invitation by the American Psychological Association, Dr. Miller developed a psychotherapy training video titled, DBT for Multi-Problem Adolescents (2007).
Dr. Miller became a DBT trainer in 1997 and has conducted over 250 lectures and workshops around the world. He is currently the lead trainer and supervisor for the first randomized trial of adolescent DBT which is being conducted in Oslo, Norway.
As a clinician, Dr. Miller maintains a private practice in White Plains, NY, and is highly sought after as a practitioner of CBT and DBT with adolescents and adults. His clinical expertise has been highlighted by various popular media outlets such as CNN, CBS TV, Teen People Magazine, Redbook, and the NY Daily News.
