Training Description
DBT Skills Training is the mode of treatment in comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in which clients learn and practice new behaviors. This two-day training covers the fundamentals of running a skills training group. Participants learn how to set up a group, group goals and guidelines, teach skills, be a co-leader, identify and solve common problems in skills groups, make skills lectures come alive, give meaningful homework assignments, and review homework assignments in a way that promotes active engagement with different client populations and settings. This course addresses problems that occur when teaching the specific skills but does not teach the skills themselves. Participants are expected to be familiar with DBT behavioral skills, and be prepared to teach some of the skills to the training group. At a minimum, participants should have read Linehan’s (1993) Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder prior to attending the training. The training assumes that therapists have a basic knowledge of the treatment and want to increase competence at offering DBT skills. This training is geared towards mental health professionals who: - Have some experience, a working knowledge, and/or prior training in DBT Skills;
- Want to learn to teach, or to improve their teaching of DBT Skills to clients.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABBP, at the University of Washington, is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is especially effective for those with chronic suicidal or other severe, dysfunctional behaviors. Research has shown DBT to be effective in reducing suicidal behavior, psychiatric hospitalization, dropout from treatment, substance abuse, anger and interpersonal difficulties.
Instructors
Cedar Koons is the former Director of the DBT program at the Women Veteran’s Comprehensive Health Center at the Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. As adjunct faculty in the department of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center she established a DBT elective for third year residents and conducted a randomized, controlled trial of DBT compared to usual treatment for women veterans with borderline personality disorder. In 1999, Koons founded Santa Fe Dialectical Behavior Therapy, LLC, an outpatient private practice DBT program. Santa Fe DBT provides comprehensive DBT and other evidence based treatment to adults in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Koons has conducted trainings on DBT for Behavioral Tech in the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan and published numerous articles and book chapters. She has a special interest in the teaching of mindfulness.
| Tony DuBose, Psy.D. is a Founding Member and the President of the Evidence Based Treatment Centers of Seattle, which includes the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Center of Seattle and the Anxiety and Stress Reduction Center of Seattle. Dr. DuBose received a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Pacific University of Oregon. He completed his predoctoral psychology internship at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, WA, and his residency requirements for psychology licensure as a postdoctoral fellow in clinical child psychology through the University of Washington’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Before training as a psychologist he completed a Master of Science degree in counseling from Loyola University of New Orleans and worked as a family therapist upon completion of that degree. He is licensed as a psychologist by the state of Washington since January 1998. He developed an interest in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) when working with severely suicidal adolescents at the Child Study and Treatment Center, the state psychiatric hospital for children in Washington, where he served as director of the older adolescent program from 1997 to 2001. He worked as a research therapist in studies on DBT at the University of Washington under the direction of Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., and is a trainer for Behavioral Tech, LLC. His experience includes treatment of adults, adolescents, children, families, inpatient adolescent populations, and persons with substance use disorders. He provides training and consultation to health care professionals in the United States, Canada, Korea, and New Zealand.
