Training Description
This training will be a highly practical, applied workshop that provides participants with a thorough working knowledge of the modifications made when applying DBT to patients with BPD and substance use disorders. DBT-SUD differs from standard DBT for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder in the way that substance use is targeted, some of the behavioral skills that are taught in Skills Training Group, how clients are attached to therapy in the beginning of treatment and how therapists are supported when clients are in danger of dropping out of therapy. The concepts and strategies will be modeled by the instructors and in-workshop practice will be used to facilitate transfer of knowledge to clinical practice.

This training is geared towards mental health professionals who:

  • Have some experience, a working knowledge, and/or prior training in DBT.
  • Have a basic knowledge of the treatment but want to modify DBT for use with clients with multiple problems, including substance abuse.

    • Define Dialectical Abstinence in DBT with clients with substance use disorders.
    • List at least three specific treatment targets for substance use clients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABBP, at the University of Washington, is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is especially effective for those with chronic suicidal or other severe, dysfunctional behaviors. Research has shown DBT to be effective in reducing suicidal behavior, psychiatric hospitalization, dropout from treatment, substance abuse, anger and interpersonal difficulties.
Instructors
Linda Dimeff, Ph.D. is Chief Scientific Officer for Behavioral Tech Research, Inc., an organization devoted to the dissemination of evidence-based practices (EBPs). She also holds an appointment as clinical faculty in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington. She continues her work as a research therapist on Dr. Linehan’s large research trials on DBT. Dr. Dimeff currently has five dissemination research grants through the National Institutes of Health.
